Turning 65 in Boise County, ID: Your 2027 Medicare Checklist

Boise County has a lot of neighbors reaching Medicare age, and the plans here are not the same as the plans in Boise. Here is the 2027 checklist we walk Boise County clients through, with the county's own plan numbers from CMS.

Short answer: Start about six months before your 65th birthday. Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months around your birthday month, and Boise County residents choose from 14 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 (CMS 2027 Landscape file), plus 8 statewide Part D plans and Medigap. We walk you through it by Zoom, phone or at our Idaho City office. Call or text 208-350-9933.

Turning 65 comes with a stack of mail, a few hard deadlines and one big choice. The deadlines are the same everywhere in Idaho. The choice is not: the Medicare Advantage plans you can buy depend on your county, and Boise County has its own short list for 2027. This checklist is the Boise County version. For the full statewide walk-through, read our Turning 65 in Idaho checklist or the month-by-month Learning Center guide.

Why Turning 65 Matters So Much in Boise County

Boise County is one of the older counties in Idaho. More than one resident in four is already 65 or older, and another one in ten is between 60 and 64, which means a lot of Idaho City, Horseshoe Bend, Garden Valley, Placerville, Crouch and Lowman neighbors are reaching Medicare age over the next few years.

In practice that means you probably know someone who just went through this. Their advice is worth hearing, but check one thing before you copy their plan: whether they live in Boise County too, and whether that plan is still sold for 2027. Seven Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage that were sold in Boise County in 2026, two of them Special Needs Plans, do not continue for 2027, according to the CMS 2027 plan crosswalk.

Your Enrollment Dates

Your Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. If you sign up in the first three months, your coverage starts on the first day of your birthday month. Sign up later in the window and coverage starts the month after you sign up (Medicare.gov, when coverage starts). Here is how that plays out for three 2027 birthdays.

Missing the window can cost you for life: Medicare adds a late enrollment penalty to Part B and Part D premiums if you go without coverage you needed (Medicare.gov, late enrollment penalties). The main exception is when you, or your spouse, are still working with group coverage from that job. That is worth a phone call before you decide; our answer on working at 65 covers the basics.

The Boise County Checklist

  1. Six months out: decide about work coverage. If you or your spouse are still working, find out whether that employer plan works with Medicare or expects you to take Part B. Bring that answer to us.
  2. Three months out: sign up for Parts A and B. Enrollment goes through Social Security (Medicare.gov, how to sign up). If you already collect Social Security benefits, you are usually enrolled automatically and your card comes in the mail.
  3. Make your list. Every prescription with the dose, your pharmacy, and every doctor and clinic you want to keep, whether they are in Boise County or down in the Treasure Valley. Plans in Boise County use different networks, and that list decides more than anything else.
  4. Choose your path. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy and a Part D plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. We break that choice down for Boise County in Medicare Advantage or Medigap in Boise County.
  5. Mind the Medigap window. Your Medigap open enrollment period lasts six months, starting the month you are 65 or older and have Part B. During it, a company cannot turn you down or charge you more because of your health (Medicare.gov, Choosing a Medigap Policy). After it, health questions can apply.
  6. Pick drug coverage you will not regret in January. Price your actual drug list, not just the premium.
  7. Sign the Scope of Appointment and meet with us. Medicare requires a short Scope of Appointment form before we talk about specific plans. Then we compare and you decide.

The plan list for Boise County is shorter than the list in Ada County, and it changed for 2027. If you are turning 65 this year, start from the 2027 list, not from what a neighbor picked in 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start on Medicare if I turn 65 in Boise County in 2027?

About six months before your 65th birthday. Your Initial Enrollment Period opens three months before your birthday month and closes three months after it, and signing up in the first three months means your coverage starts on the first day of your birthday month.

How many Medicare Advantage plans are sold in Boise County for 2027?

14, not counting Special Needs Plans, from 3 carriers, according to the CMS 2027 Landscape file. 10 of them have a $0 Part C premium and 9 include Part D drug coverage.

Are Boise County Medicare plans the same as the plans in Boise?

No. Plans are approved county by county. Boise County has 14 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 and Ada County has 19, so a plan your friend in Boise picked may not be sold where you live. We pull the list for your own address.

What is the 2027 Part B premium?

It is pending. CMS usually announces the next year's Part B premium and deductible in mid-November. For 2026 the standard premium is $202.90 a month. We will update our pages as soon as the 2027 amount is published.

Can Personal Touch help me sign up if I live in Garden Valley, Horseshoe Bend or Lowman?

Yes. We work with Boise County clients by Zoom or phone, and in person at our Idaho City office by appointment. There is no charge for our time. Call or text 208-350-9933.
