Medicare Enrollment Window Finder
Medicare has five different enrollment windows with five different rule sets — and the acronyms don't help. Tell us your situation and the month, and we'll name your window, your dates, and your next steps.
Your situation
Two questions, no math. This tool names your most likely window — a quick call confirms it against your actual dates.
This calculator provides rough educational estimates only — it is not a quote, a recommendation, or financial advice. Actual premiums, penalties, and costs depend on your situation, carrier, and plan year. For a real comparison, call us at 208-350-9933.
How This Tool Works
No dollar math here — just Medicare's own calendar rules, per CMS and Medicare.gov. Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your 65th birthday. Working past 65 with employer coverage? You get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period for Part B when that coverage ends — but only about 63 days for drug coverage, which trips people up constantly. After that, the recurring windows take over: AEP (October 15 – December 7, open to everyone), the MA Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31, one switch for Medicare Advantage members), and the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31, the catch-up lane for people who missed their initial window — often with penalties attached).
The tool picks the window that best fits your situation and the month you selected. It can't see your exact birthday, your employer paperwork, or the Special Enrollment Periods that hide in life events like moving — which is why the answer comes with an asterisk and our phone number. Confirming your real dates takes us about five minutes: 208-350-9933.
Want to go deeper? Our guide to Medicare enrollment periods walks every window in plain English, and our Medicare Advantage page explains what you'd actually be switching between. If timing already slipped, the Medicare penalty calculator shows what waiting costs — and the Part A premium check confirms whether your hospital coverage is premium-free.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 5 organizations which offer 300 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Questions we hear a lot
Enrollment Window FAQ
What are the main Medicare enrollment periods?
There are five big ones: your Initial Enrollment Period (the 7 months around turning 65), the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31), Special Enrollment Periods triggered by life events like leaving employer coverage, and the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) for people who missed their initial window.
When is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period?
October 15 through December 7, every year. During AEP you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and add or change Part D drug coverage. Whatever you pick takes effect January 1.
How long do I have to enroll in Part B after leaving my job?
You get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period that starts when your employment or group coverage ends, whichever comes first. But your window to add drug coverage is only about 63 days — and COBRA doesn't count as employer coverage for this purpose. Don't run out the clock.
What's the difference between AEP and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?
AEP (October 15 – December 7) is open to everyone on Medicare and allows nearly any change. The MA Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) is only for people already on a Medicare Advantage plan, and it allows one switch — to another MA plan, or back to Original Medicare with a drug plan.
What happens if I missed my Initial Enrollment Period?
You can enroll during the General Enrollment Period, January 1 – March 31, with coverage starting the month after you sign up. Late-enrollment penalties may apply — usually for life — so it's worth checking whether a Special Enrollment Period fits your situation first. Our Medicare penalty calculator shows what the wait could cost.
