What Is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage — officially Medicare Part C — is a way to get your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company instead of directly from the federal government. Every Advantage plan must cover everything Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers, and most bundle in prescription drug coverage too. Think of it as Medicare in a combo meal: one card, one plan, one company handling the whole thing.
Because private carriers run these plans, they compete for your business by adding extras. That's why so many Advantage plans include benefits Original Medicare has never covered. Typical add-ons include:
- Dental coverage — cleanings, and often fillings, crowns, or dentures
- Vision coverage — exams and an eyewear allowance
- Hearing coverage — exams and hearing-aid benefits
- Over-the-counter (OTC) allowances — a quarterly amount for pharmacy items
- Fitness memberships, transportation, and telehealth perks on many plans
If you'd rather keep Original Medicare and add gap coverage instead, that path exists too — see our Medicare Supplement page, or read our full comparison of Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in Idaho.
Are $0-Premium Plans Too Good to Be True?
$0-premium Medicare Advantage plans are real, and plenty of Boise-area plans offer them for the 2026 plan year. But $0 premium doesn't mean $0 cost. You still pay your Part B premium — $202.90 per month standard for 2026, per CMS — plus the plan's copays and coinsurance when you actually use care. Every plan also has an annual out-of-pocket maximum, which is your true worst-case number.
Here's the honest version: a $0-premium plan with the wrong network can cost you far more than a modest-premium plan that includes your doctors. Premium is one of our six comparison areas — it's just never the only one.

HMO vs. PPO: What's the Difference?
Most Medicare Advantage plans in Idaho come in two flavors. The right one depends on how much flexibility you want — and what you'll pay for it.
| Feature | HMO | PPO |
|---|---|---|
| Network rules | In-network care only (except emergencies) | Any Medicare provider; out-of-network costs more |
| Referrals for specialists | Often required | Usually not required |
| Typical monthly cost | Lower — many $0-premium options | Higher premiums or copays for the flexibility |
| Best fit for | Folks whose doctors are all in one system | Folks who split care between systems or travel often |
| Out-of-network coverage | Generally none (non-emergency) | Covered at a higher cost share |

When Can You Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan?
You can join a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), October 15 through December 7 each year, with coverage starting January 1. If you're already on an Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 through March 31, allows one switch to a different Advantage plan or a return to Original Medicare. You also get an Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday.
Miss those windows? Don't panic. Special Enrollment Periods exist for things like moving out of your plan's service area or losing employer coverage. A quick call to 208-350-9933 and we'll tell you exactly where you stand — no guessing required.
Why Does the Network Matter So Much in the Treasure Valley?
Boise's healthcare world largely revolves around two hospital systems: St. Luke's and St. Alphonsus. Some Medicare Advantage networks lean heavily toward one system; others include both. Choose a plan built around the "wrong" system for your doctors, and you could face out-of-network bills — or a very awkward conversation at the front desk.
That's why network checking is baked into every comparison we run. Before you enroll, we verify your primary doctor, your specialists, your preferred hospital, and your pharmacy against the plan's directory for the coming year. It takes us minutes and can save you thousands. It's also why working with a local Medicare agent in Boise beats a 1-800 number in another time zone — we actually know which clinics belong to which system.
How We Compare Advantage Plans Across Carriers
As an independent agency, we compare Medicare Advantage options across the carriers serving Idaho rather than selling one company's menu. CarrieAnne breaks every option into six comparison areas — premium, network, prescriptions, out-of-pocket costs, extra benefits, and the carrier itself — then walks you through a full presentation of the plan you like best. The whole process costs you nothing, and there's never pressure to enroll.
- Your doctors and hospital system verified against each plan's network
- Your prescription list run against each plan's drug formulary (see our Part D page for why that matters)
- Dental, vision, hearing, and OTC extras compared honestly — not just headlined
- Gaps flagged, with fixes like hospital indemnity or standalone dental, vision & hearing coverage when they make sense
- A local team on Federal Way in Boise that's still here in February when you have a claims question

Medicare Advantage FAQs
What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Plans must cover everything Part A and Part B cover, and most also include prescription drug coverage plus extras like dental, vision, and hearing benefits.
Are $0-premium Medicare Advantage plans really free?
No. A $0 premium means you pay nothing extra each month for the plan itself, but you still pay your Medicare Part B premium ($202.90/month standard for the 2026 plan year), plus copays and coinsurance when you use care. The real cost of a plan shows up in its copays, network rules, and out-of-pocket maximum — not just its premium.
What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO Medicare Advantage plan?
An HMO generally requires you to use the plan's network of doctors and hospitals (except in emergencies) and often to get referrals for specialists, usually in exchange for lower costs. A PPO lets you go outside the network for a higher cost and typically doesn't require referrals, but usually has higher premiums or copays.
When can I enroll in or switch a Medicare Advantage plan?
The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 every year, with changes effective January 1. If you're already on a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31 lets you make one switch to another Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare. Special Enrollment Periods may apply if you move or lose coverage.
Do Boise Medicare Advantage plans cover St. Luke's and St. Alphonsus?
It depends on the plan. In the Treasure Valley, some Medicare Advantage networks are built around St. Luke's, some around St. Alphonsus, and some include both. Before recommending any plan, we verify that your specific doctors, clinics, and preferred hospital system are in that plan's network for the coming plan year.
Does it cost anything to use a Medicare Advantage agent in Boise?
No. Our comparisons and enrollment help are free to you. We're paid a standardized commission by the insurance carrier you choose, and CMS rules keep those commissions consistent — so you pay the same premium whether you enroll through us or directly, but with us you get a local advocate year-round.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 5 organizations which offer 300 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.
