What the Health Insurance Marketplace Is
The health insurance marketplace (often called the exchange) is where people who buy their own coverage, rather than getting it from an employer, Medicare or Medicaid, compare and enroll in individual and family health plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It is also the only place to get a premium tax credit, the federal subsidy that lowers monthly premiums for eligible households.
According to HealthCare.gov, Marketplace plans must cover treatment for pre-existing conditions and cannot reject you, charge you more or refuse to pay for essential health benefits because of a condition you had before coverage started. They also have a yearly limit on in-network out-of-pocket costs. For 2026 that limit is $10,600 for self-only coverage and $21,200 for a family; for 2027 it is $12,000 and $24,000, according to CMS.
Your Health Idaho vs. HealthCare.gov
Most states use the federal platform, HealthCare.gov. Idaho is different: it runs a state-based marketplace, Your Health Idaho, which calls itself Idaho’s Health Insurance Marketplace. For Idaho residents that means:
- You apply, shop and enroll at YourHealthIdaho.org, not HealthCare.gov.
- Your Health Idaho sets its own Open Enrollment dates. HealthCare.gov’s 2027 dates (November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027) do not apply here.
- Customer support is through Your Health Idaho (855-944-3246), and it works with certified agents and brokers, like us, who can help at no cost to you.
The federal rules on tax credits, metal levels and out-of-pocket limits still apply; only the platform and some dates differ.
2027 Dates for Your Health Idaho
| Window | Dates | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Plan preview | Oct. 1 – Oct. 14, 2026 | Browse 2027 plans and see an estimated tax credit, without creating an account |
| Open Enrollment | Oct. 15 – Dec. 15, 2026 | Apply for a tax credit, enroll in, change or renew a plan for 2027 |
| Special Enrollment | Year-round with a Qualifying Life Event | 60 or 90 days after the event, depending on the event |
Your Health Idaho says coverage begins on your policy’s effective date and that your first premium payment must be made for enrollment to be finalized. It is currently renewing existing enrollees’ 2027 coverage and notifying them by email. Do not let the renewal run on autopilot: plan premiums, networks and your tax credit can all change. Our special enrollment periods guide covers mid-year changes.
What You Can Buy
Plans are grouped into metal levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, by how the plan and you share costs on average. Bronze has lower premiums and higher costs when you use care; Gold has higher premiums and lower costs at the point of care. Silver matters most for lower-income households, because cost-sharing reductions are only available on Silver plans. Details in our metal levels guide.
Your Health Idaho also offers dental and vision plans. For people who are not eligible for, or not choosing, a marketplace plan, we also offer short-term medical coverage; it is not Marketplace coverage, is not eligible for tax credits and works differently, so read our blog post on short-term health insurance in Idaho before considering it.
Savings on Premiums
The premium tax credit is based on your expected household income for the coverage year compared with the federal poverty level, and on the cost of a benchmark Silver plan where you live. The temporary enhanced credits of recent years expired after 2025. For 2026 and later, the IRS confirms that the limit of 400% of the federal poverty level is back, and there is no cap on how much excess credit you may have to repay at tax time. Our premium tax credits guide has the 2026 and 2027 percentages.
When you apply through Your Health Idaho, your tax credit eligibility is determined right away, and you can take the credit in advance to lower your monthly premium or claim it when you file.

Can I enroll in a Your Health Idaho plan outside open enrollment?
Only with a Qualifying Life Event that opens a Special Enrollment Period, such as losing other coverage, moving to or within Idaho, marriage or divorce, or having or adopting a child. Depending on the event, you have 60 or 90 days to enroll. American Indian and Alaska Native Idahoans can enroll year-round.
Does it cost more to enroll through an agent?
No. Your Health Idaho works with certified agents like Personal Touch, who can help you apply and enroll at no cost to you, and the premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or with an agent’s help.
